This Friday, November 22nd, marks one of my favorite events of the year – the Luminary Festival & Window Wonderland in downtown St. Joseph. From 5-8 p.m., hundreds of luminarias will light the streets while local businesses showcase their creativity in the Window Wonderland competition.
I always recommend this event to my clients because it perfectly captures the community spirit that makes St. Joseph such a desirable place to live. You can purchase tickets for $15-20, enjoy refreshments at participating shops, and take advantage of holiday sales. The Jolly Trolley adds an extra touch of whimsy, running between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to help you explore all the festivities.

The Reindog Parade on December 6th at 3 p.m. is pure joy – imagine dozens of costumed pets dressed as “Santa Bernards” and “Reindeer Rottweilers” parading through downtown with their equally festive owners. The parade culminates with Santa’s arrival, and from December 6-23, children can visit Santa’s House on State Street on select dates.
That same weekend, the Holiday Artisan Market on December 7th (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) offers handcrafted and specialty items from local artisans. As your realtor, I can tell you that this kind of thriving local business community is a huge selling point for the area – it shows economic vitality and community support for small entrepreneurs.
Christmas in the Village in Stevensville (December 7, 3-6 p.m.) rounds out the weekend with sleigh rides, cookie decorating, photos with Santa, and games. These family-friendly events are exactly why young families consistently choose Southwest Michigan when they’re ready to put down roots.
Light Up Your World
Light Up the Bluff during the first weekend of December deserves special mention. This community-wide celebration includes caroling, the lighting of St. Joseph’s magnificent tree, and the beginning of light displays that continue through mid-February. I’ve watched families fall in love with St. Joseph during these evening light displays – there’s something magical about walking through a neighborhood where every street seems to glow with holiday spirit.
Hidden Gems Throughout the Region
While St. Joseph gets much of the attention, I love sharing the holiday treasures scattered throughout Southwest Michigan with my clients. Each community has its own personality and charm.
South Haven hosts the Mistletoe Market from November 22 through December 14 at the South Haven Center for the Arts. This indoor artisan market operates Wednesday through Sunday and features local vendors offering gifts, décor, and seasonal treats. The preview party on November 21 (6-8 p.m.) is always a hit with locals who appreciate getting first access to unique holiday finds.
In Benton Harbor, the Eden Springs Park Holiday Train Rides operate weekends from December 6-21.
